I'm doing a sociology project on two subcultures, including weeaboos, and am trying to work out why weebs are weebs. So far I've come up with a naturally obsessive and inappropriate personality, but I can't think of anything else or why it seems most prevalent amongst teenage girls other than escapism and immaturity (as well as something about patriarchy). Any ideas? Hmmm, if you don’t mind, I’m going to publish this so you can get everyone’s opinions! For me, it was sort of that “puberty phase” a lot of people go through, like elementary-school stage. My friends who weren’t into anime with me were like, SUPER addicted to horses (that one book series…. Saddle Club??? Can’t remember), Neopets, Harry Potter, etc. It was when we still had recess and were super imaginative and liked to put ourselves into these things.
Luckily I started getting out of my weeb phase when I cosplayed for the first time with some older, more mature girls that I met, and they began to show me the path. If it weren’t for them, I fear I might still be a weeaboo, because my ex-weeaboo friends are still on that (rather annoying) path u__u
